My wife and her sister dragged myself and the sister’s boyfriend to a fancy restaurant for dinner this evening. It was delicious, but there were…complications.
Look, I don’t like getting dressed up, okay? I hate ties. I’m okay with sports jackets and blazers and stuff, though. I do hate tucking in my shirt as well (nothing worse than seeing a cartoonist’s gut hang over his belt while he pigs out on steak and tiny little fried mac’n’cheese thingies). On the other hand, I love delicious dinners, and even if this one was in a fancy restaurant with a dress code and crap, the food was fantastic.

People can just be so picky!
Another brilliant sketch. Gotta say I really like your shading. How do you get it to look so . . . I guess realistic on such a small surface?
As always, thanks for sharing.
I use a set of prismacolor grayscale markers for the shading. I also assume the light source is always above and to the right hand side (if you’re facing the drawing). After that, it’s just a matter of looking at the characters and asking myself, “what would be blocked from direct exposure to that light source?” and shading the crap out of whatever that would be.
