It’s the last day of classes before Winter Break. I have to imagine this is something like how my students will behave on their way out. The ones who bothered to show up today, that is.

Sketch a Day, Day 24
I do enjoy my job immensely, and a big part of the reason is the students I get to teach each day. One of our students is a young girl, adopted from China, who is about the sweetest and most adorable individual you’ll ever meet. She has a bubbly, giggly personality, which I hope this quick sketch brings out.
Sketch a Day, Day 23
The students at my school are all champing at the bit for Winter Break to arrive. We’re in school until this coming Thursday, when we’ll gain freedom for a good 11 days. Granted, I’m pretty sure all the teachers are just as ready for the break as the students.
Anyway, the weather’s not particularly cold here today, but I thought a group of bundled-up carolers might be just the ticket anyway.
Sketch a Day, Day 22
Here we are, kicking off the fourth week of daily sketches! Today’s sketch is a quick one I did with a thin marker, just for the heck of it. No pencils, no prep, just me and a marker. It felt pretty loose and fun, and I’m actually pretty pleased with how it turned out.
Also, I’ve got a little something extra in the works. Check back later this afternoon for a special bonus.

Man, three weeks of this! I tried drawing today’s sketch on my phone using Sketchbook Mobile. My wife has a stylus she got for her iPad, so I used that. The results are…amateurish, to say the least, but I think it’s a matter of getting used to the way the stylus interacts with the touchscreen. Anyway, I’ll have my regular art supplies back tomorrow, so it shouldn’t be a problem again.

Late post. I’m sorry. We had a tacky Christmas sweater party. Things were fun. Anyway, here’s a picture with a dude wrapped in Christmas lights, because why not.
Sketch a Day, Day 19
It’s been a much too busy day, and I accidentally left all of my drawing supplies at school. This was drawn in my Moleskine journal with a regular gel ink pen, no pencil sketch, so it’s a little rougher than usual. As it’s my sister-in-law’s birthday, I figured I’d do a quick little portrait of her.

I have trouble drawing hands. Or rather, I’m never particularly happy with the way hand I’ve drawn come out if they’re not just curled into a fist. I’ve been trying to work on that, so today’s sketch is a bit of hand exercise (keep those filthy thoughts and comments to yourselves, folks). I’m also trying to get better with forced perspective, because trying to improve just one skill at a time wasn’t enough of a challenge, apparently.
Anyway, I’m not 100% happy with the way today’s sketch turned out. I think it’s the legs (yay, something else to work on).

I usually draw pretty small. I mean, everything I’ve been posting in these daily sketches fits on a 3″x5″ index card. So today’s sketch is an effort to start thinking bigger. It still fits on an index card, but it’s a close-up self portrait. I also inked this one using a brush pen instead of my usual gel-ink ballroller. I’ve always been fascinated by the variation in line width you can get with a brush pen, and I’ve been trying to learn how to use them for awhile. I think I’m starting to get the hang of it.
