Color Study #1

Hope I don't die before the first commercial break!

As I mentioned yesterday, my wife got me some new Prismacolor markers for my upcoming birthday. I decided to try them out with some basic shading (really the same shading I always do, just over color). I’m not terribly impressed with my results, but I’m a pretty harsh critic of myself. I think it’s one of those things I definitely need to work with more, but it could easily turn out to be something fun to add from time to time.

Anyway, there’ll be a real comic up later. This was just a quickie for fun.

Sketch a Day, Day 106

I don't think I quite got her face right here.

My birthday presents arrived today, apparently, even though my birthday isn’t until the end of March (the 27th, to be exact). My wife, though, was too excited for me open the presents and insisted I had to open them all today.

What she got me all turned out to be pretty damn awesome. First, she got me some Prismacolor markers (in actual colors, not my usual grayscale ones) and a blender marker (apparently the liquid in the blender marker helps to blend colors together or something. I’ll have to do some research on that one). She also got me a Star Wars Moleskine journal, which is pretty freakin’ awesome. So yeah, birthday is going pretty well so far, even if it is still two weeks and a bit away.

Sketch a Day, Day 104

They all look so concerned in such different ways.

My wife and her sister dragged myself and the sister’s boyfriend to a fancy restaurant for dinner this evening. It was delicious, but there were…complications.

Look, I don’t like getting dressed up, okay? I hate ties. I’m okay with sports jackets and blazers and stuff, though. I do hate tucking in my shirt as well (nothing worse than seeing a cartoonist’s gut hang over his belt while he pigs out on steak and tiny little fried mac’n’cheese thingies). On the other hand, I love delicious dinners, and even if this one was in a fancy restaurant with a dress code and crap, the food was fantastic.

Sketch a Day, Day 103

I was pretty pissed off when that happened, lemme tell ya.

So I got Game of Thrones on Blu-Ray earlier this week. It is, of course, pretty freakin’ epic (granted, I’ve already seen the whole season, but I gotta rewatch the whole thing in preparation for Season 2 on April 1) (unless that’s just a cruel April Fool’s Day joke, in which case I will cry).

Sketch a Day, Day 100

It says a lot that I include my wife and sisters-in-law with the fictional characters.

One hundred sketches? How the hell did that happen already?

Anyway, yeah, we’re in the triple digits now, baby! I drew this one in a sketchbook, so the original image is quite a bit larger than my usual work (though it still only comes up as the same size ’cause I took a picture with my phone). I’m glad so many folks have started coming by every day and checking my stuff out. Makes me feel all warm and squishy inside.

If you like what you see, spread the word! Tell your friends! Your enemies! Your pets! Y’know, assuming they’re pretty intelligent and can use the Internet (and have opposable thumbs). There’ve been several days in the past few weeks we’ve cleared 100 views per day…it’d be great if we could do that every day!

But, yeah, thanks everyone! Here’s to the next hundred!

Sketch a Day, Day 99

Yup. A vomit joke. I'm classy.

It’s rather sad that the final sketch in the double-digits (before we hit the big 100 tomorrow) is a hastily-drawn piece of junk, but I feel awful today. The wife does, too. We think it’s food poisoning from dinner last night. Either way, all I’ve eaten today was a couple of pieces of toast and a ginger ale. I’ve kept it down, but only just barely.

Tune in tomorrow, when (hopefully) the comic won’t be about vomit and bodily functions!*

* – I make no promises, people.
